Moving home for Christmas in the Panda soon. Have this space to work with which will need to fit all my possessions. These include a 32" tv, bike, a shit ton of books and 3 bin bags full of clothes.
I wish I'd bought one with the factory roof bars.

It can be done. Look on craigslist for a hatch-mount bike carrier. I had one forever, and it was pretty great.

I managed easily before but minus the bike. The only money I have left to spend on the car is saved for it's next service so unfortunately buying a bike rack is a no go.

I'd take those tires off the bike for sure. Maybe handlebars too.

Oh yeah definitely the bike is getting stripped down. Wheels, bars, seat and possibly the forks if necessary.

Save space on clothing by wearing more! You could also protect the TV by wrapping it with more clothes. Maybe the bike can be dismantled - front wheel off perhaps?
And underwear can go in the glovebox and door bins.

Yikes. May the force be with you.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 12:14 |

That might work...
The door bins will likely be used to store bottles of rum and scotch I want to take (I hope I don't get pulled over that'll look bad).

This is what all those hours of Tetris have prepared you for.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 12:23 |

...wrap your booze up with more clothes!
Oh wait, that'd look even more suspicious.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 12:25 |

maybe use a vacuum to suck all air out of clothes bags. will save ton of room

If I've done it in a Geo Metro , you can do it in a Panda.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 12:28 |

Then if it leaks it's not just cry for a little while then dry out the door pockets, it'll ruin my clothes too.

Fair point. I think with a geo the worry wouldnt be fitting the stuff, its whether it can still get to highway speeds with the extra weight...
![]() 11/30/2014 at 12:32 |
|
Either that or I could just put them under my tools, the weight will compact them down.

But I'm not very good at tetris...

Better start practicing then.

Make sure you post a pic, because that's going to be one impressive packing job.

There's a joke to be made here...
But yeah I'll get a pic, I likely wont have use of my back windows.

Mine had the 4-cylinder, good for 65hp. It wasn't too bad on the highway, in fact being loaded up with stuff helped, it wasn't blown around by crosswinds and passing trucks as much.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 13:31 |

Ah that's not so bad then, I was thinking of the 50 hp ish version. We had one as a courtesy car (as a Suzuki Swift) and it was terrible. The 65hp version isnt far off the power of my Panda, although it has a fair bit less torque and the Panda does pretty well fully laden.

With my brother, we once went on holiday with the Panda : 2 mountain bikes, tent, camping gear, clothes, skateboard... And all of them IN the car. Because bikes on the roof are a real pain : 4 people (going to Le Mans Classic) + 4 bikes = 25mpg, in a Panda!
Don't worry for your moving!
Bonus : Fiat Panda Extreme Mover Edition

I'm impressed. I'm guessing the economy drop is because it's the petrol though? I have the diesel and with three tall adults, and not so tall me, in it the fuel economy barely changed at all.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 13:48 |
|
Yes it's the 1.2 liter petrol. The economy drop is because once you've throw 4 bikes on the roof, the aerodynamic of the Fiat is worse than a refrigerator. When I went to the 24h of the Nurburgring, we were 3 in the car (nothing on the roof) and I mostly drive with a heavy foot but I managed to do nearly 35 mpg.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 13:55 |

Yeah true, the height of the car causes other problems too, the added weight of the glass roof on mine makes the body roll pretty alarming in some corners. 1000 miles of normal driving, (I'm a relatively quick driver no hypermiling here) and I've averaged just under 55 mpg in the 1.3 diesel.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 14:49 |

The Multijet is a small drinker ! I think the body roll is not due to the extra weight of the glass roof (I have it too), it's because the panda is a tall car with narrow track. Maybe if you mount some 100hp wheels and spring it'll change a bit...
![]() 11/30/2014 at 14:56 |
|
It is, that's partly why I bought it. People with a lighter foot than I say they get around 70mpg. I know the narrow track and height are what mostly cause the roll, I just think the glass roof makes it a little worse. I toyed with getting 100hp wheels actually, two things stopped me 1) price and 2) I'd need to fit fender flares or theyd stick out from the arches and look strange.

Believe it or not there was a version called the "LSi" that added a teeny weeny turbo to bump power to 75.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 19:13 |

Not too bad for a light weight car, would likely out run my Panda haha.

If you think that's quick, the previous generation Swift had a GTi model with a 101hp DOHC version of the same motor.

This proves that all small hatches should have a sports version.

No need for a roof rack, just lots of rope!
